The Marvels - Movie Review
I can't say this for most other marvel movies these days, but it made me smile. There were fun scenes(like the training montage!), there was some pretty sick fight scenes, and there was emotion. They even got me excited in the end scenes, both of them!
Let's start off with the fun.
Kamala aka Ms Marvel(Iman Villani) always brings the fun with her contagious enthusiasm and innocence. We love to see it! Then there was that duo between Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel. Unexpected but surprisingly cute! I think they cut back on Captain Marvel's prideful attitude, which really helped balance the movie. They still showed her flaws, especially when it came to working alongside her 'niece' Monica Rambeau after a long separation. But they were able to overcome their past and work together and have plenty of both meaningful and fun moments in between the action scenes.
My biggest critiques for the film would probably be the plot and the soundtrack. I don't think either were memorable or intriguing, which I personally really enjoy in a film. But considering Marvel's recent undertakings, I'm gonna go ahead and applaud both.
The plot wasn't terrible, although it wasn't great. I think the movie had a sort of weird vibe that i can't explain, but i liked a lot about it to make up for it. The humour was on par, especially the flerkin scene, where the loudspeaker announces that everyone should sit still and allow the flerkins to eat them. I definitely found that old MCU feel in a few of the moments, especially that cute scene where they test out their swapping abilities.
I also have to applaud the ending. Ant-Man 3 ended terribly in my opinion, giving us some emotion(finally) and then cutting it off by bringing happy endings and smiles all around. A story isn't a story without some sort of cost. Monica getting separated, seemingly forever, finally gave us that storyline price I look for in a movie. I really appreciated that, especially in the emotional moment Monica closes the spacetime gap and Carol reaches out for her. I wasn't crying, not by a long shot, and as neither character is my favorite, I did feel something, and that's what you look for in a movie. To feel something.
The villain, sadly, had no arc, and she died rather suddenly, which is another small critique- I say small because overall, the villain had a reason, a purpose for what she did. It was definitely twisted and wrong- targeting worlds on the account of someone she hated- but it was a hint of a deeper character that sadly, we never got to explore.
Overall, I think i'll give the movie a 6 1/2 out of 10. Once you see the movie, let me know in the comments what you would rate it.
